Harnessing Harmony

The luxe interiors of Harmen Design effortlessly balance form with function while celebrating the stories of clients’ lives. When Iranian-born architects and designers Goli Basiri and Kia Kazemian founded Harmen Design in 2018, their goal was clear: to craft stunning residential interiors where external and internal elements not only coexist but also harmoniously unite, creating a profound ambiance.
In fact, the firm’s name is a nod to the word “harmony.” Today, the Oakville-based firm works with top custom homebuilders, earning acclaim throughout Ontario and beyond for their intelligent, soulful approach to design that keeps clients’ lives and aesthetics front and centre.
The process begins with a comprehensive questionnaire that helps clients tease apart looks and styles they merely like from ones that bring them joy.
The function of each room is fully explored within the client’s lifestyle. “Do the homeowners love to entertain? Are they looking for more of a Zen retreat? Every answer brings us closer to our final design,” explains Kazemian. The team’s diversified tool kit supports the journey, from 2D drawings to virtual reality headsets that allow clients to “walk” from room to room, experiencing and swapping out colours, finishes, and furnishings in a dynamic way.
While renowned for their elegant minimalist and contemporary palette, Basiri and Kazemian never let labels define their work. “We believe that good interior design is, at its core, storytelling: a reflection of the people living in the home,” concludes Basiri. A recent Toronto project perfectly manifests this ethos, with the great staircase’s sleek geometry warmed by the client’s bright artwork, chevron hardwood flooring, and mid-century modern furniture.
